BFT Discussion: Million Man March - Is It Relevant Today?

On one of the Facebook discussions, someone mentioned the Million Man March that occured in 1995. Well, the 15th year anniversary of the Million Man March is fast approaching. This mass gathering of men was held in Washington, D.C. on October 16, 1995 under the leadership of Nation of Islam Leader, Louis Farrakhan with the help of some churches. The goal of this march was for black men to come together in unity, atonement and brotherhood. My question to the black men... was this march beneficial and/ or helpful in the daily lives of black men? Do you feel that is necessary for black men to continue this gatherings of this magnitude or not more often? Did anyone attend the million man march back in 1995? If so, can you please share your feelings of the march and how it is relevant to today's economic and social ills?

  1. The million man march (and any big gathering for that matter) was like the election of President Barack Obama; if we just wanted to have a feel good event then we are engaging in futile activity. If we expect a one-time event to bring about any significant change then we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. The key to the effectiveness of any movement is continued motion. If Black organizations and institutions had developed effective programs based on the theme of the million man march and followed through with those programs then the event would have served it's intended purpose. Otherwise, it was merely a symbolic feel-good event suitable for the archives. The theme of the MMM is still relevant; there is still time to make good on the promises and committments issued at the event. The question is: "where are our hearts and minds today?"

  2. Like the first comment- it was a great feel good event... but with anything- the feel good wears off after a few weeks... something that should have happened is that they should have set up organizations locally to meet once a month and have smaller rallys about every 6 months to it to be really effective.
