BFT Movie of the Week: Love Jones

Check out Darius' poem "Brotha to the Night." Does this bring back memories?

"Lincoln Heights" on ABC Family Channel

Another favorite show of BFT is "Lincoln Heights" on ABC Family channel. This is a must watch show! This drama series is in it's 4th season. The series stars Russell Hornsby (Eddie Sutton - father and cop), Nicki Micheaux (Jenn Sutton- mother and nurse, Erica Hubbard (Cassie - oldest daughter), Robert Adamson (Charles - Cassie's boyfriend), Rhyon Brown (Lizzie - daughter), Mishon Ratliff (Tay - son), and Alice Greczyn (Sage Lund - family friend).

This drama is a about a family that moved back to the "neighborhood" that Eddie grew up in. The neighborhood is a bit rough but the Suttons find a way to make a it home. This drama shows a married couple who has their ups and downs. It shows the children's growing pains. The show protrays family values for their children and a love for their community.

This drama gets 5 black stars. It is a must see. The show airs Monday nights 8 pm/ 7pm central.

Check out "Brothers" on Fox Friday nights at 8pm/ 7 pm central

I got a chance to watch the pilot episode of Brother's on Fox. It is starring Michael Strahan, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, CCH Pounder and Carl Weathers. This comedy is about a handsome retired NFL player whose business manager ran off with all of money leaving him broke. He gets a call from his mother to return home due to his father's alleged failing health. He comes home to find that his family needs his help and realizing that he needs their help but returning home can be more than he bargained for.

My thoughts on the show. I like the show. The comedy antics of Daryl Chill Mitchell are right on. He kept me laughing. Michael Strahan plays the role of the playboy brother that has the women falling to their feet. Carl Weathers plays the father who may be losing it a bit but not completely. CCH Pounder plays the all American mom who quick thinking and snappy comebacks keep these men in line.

Although this is a new comedy, it has a lot of potential. The show is funny and with with a little bit of time it will be even funnier. The only thing I don't like about the show is the time slot. Friday night for black folks is not a good night. If you expect for it to be a success we need a Sunday night or a night Monday - Thursday. The weekend, the show is asking to be cancelled.

There is not a lot of people of color on network TV. There are no Latino shows. There are a select few African American shows. What we are seeing are "a" Black person on this show or that show. A Latino person on this show or that show. Where are the Asians on network TV? We need a little more diversity on network TV because the United States is a diverse nation.

So I give Brothers 4 out of 5 black stars! Keep up the good work.

10 Steps to Preventing Cancer

I was reading an interesting article on Black Voices website and within that article there were 10 steps that you can take to prevent cancer. I am hoping that these steps could save somebody's life from cancer.

1. Quit smoking - This will help reduce your chance of getting lung cancer.

2. Protect yourself from the sun - Use suncreen. Black folks don't believe that they can get skin cancer. This is not true. Black folks are less likely to get it but are more likely to die from it.

3. Find out if you are being exposed - Find out if their is carcinogens at your workplace. Also find out if your employer is protecting you.

4. Know and share your history - Find out your family's history of cancer. Let your doctor know and get checked out. Share your family's history with loved ones so that they can be checked too!

5. Stock up on fruits and vegetables - Eating fruits and vegetables is proven to help reduce the risk of colon and lung cancer.

6. Know your status - Get all your recommended tests for your sex and age group. If your body does not feel right, check with your doctor. Early detection is the key to beating the disease.

7. Cut back on red and processed meats - Long-term and high consumption of beef have been linked to increased risk of colon cancer. Substitute some beef with poultry or fish.

8. Drink in moderation - Alcohol can increase the risk of getting cancer and/or increase the progress of the cancer if you already have it.

9. Exercise and eat right - Obesity is associated with breast, colon, pancreatic and kidney cancers.

10. Get a good night's rest - this can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Have you tried lately?

"I tell people I never stopped walking. I just stopped physically taking steps. But you never stop walking. Don't ever, ever give up. I refuse to lose and second place...that ain't good enough. First or nothing. Winning...winning means to me the journey. The destination...that's the end. It's how do I survive the journey. I'm a be who I am. This chair does not define who I am, it just move me around to get me where I need to be." Daryl "Chill" Mitchell.

I got this quote from the TV program "Life After" on TV One. It is really a very powerful and inspirational quote. For those you who don't know who Daryl "Chill" Mitchell is, he was part of the hip hop trio Grove B. Chill and his most famous role was in House Party staring Kid and Play. He later became paralyzed from the waist down due to a motorcycle accident.

I just want you to know that no matter what your circumstances are, anything is possible. You have to have drive and determination. You also need a vision as to where you want to go. If you don't try, then how do you know if you will succeed or not. The choice is yours. This may require doing something that you never done before or it may require that you try something differently. The key word here is try.

My pastor said something in bible study this evening that caught my attention. He said that it is not about your ability, but if you are available. He went on to say that God can work thru you if you are available. It does not matter if you have the ability to do it or not, it only matters if you make yourself available to be used. If you are a believer of God, then you know that He has the power to do all things including giving you the ability to do whatever it is that you need to do. In order to have the power of ability, you have to be available.

So I urge, to try. I urge you to have the tenacity that Daryl "Chill" Mitchell has about life. Go after your dreams and to make them realities.
