Black Enterprise's Ed Gordon Talks with Spike Lee on Our World

  1. The statement made by Spike Lee referring to some of Tyler Perry's productions being as I put it, "Throwback to Amos and Andy", is right on point. I also believe Spike was directly referring to Tyler's charactors like Madea and Mr. Brown.

I have to agree with Spike on this. Tyler Perry has made many strides with his career and the career of many African Americans in film, tv and stage. Although, the creative progression is rather stagnent and many African American film makers take this route.

Take the Madea charactor...Madea is to Tyler, like Mars Blackmon was to Spike. But Spike creatively moved on, where Tyler relives this beloved yet trifling charactor over and over again. I believe this is just another form of lack of creativity. Keep in mind these are the days of Reality TV, so that in a way it's keeping it at the status quo across the board.

But it is what it is. Look at it from Tyler's vantage point. The plays were very successful. traveling from city to city, he knew that if he could fill a theater 2 nights in a row in Chicago with a stage production, imagine what he could do with larger distribution of a movie. The stage plays were and still are testing grounds for the success of his movies. In the long run it most likely takes less money to do the movie production then a national stage play with top notch talent.

Tyler Perry provides a product and his fan base eats it up everytime. Two questions: Is Tyler Perry creative enough to make productions that has more substance and keep his fanbase happy? The second, is his fanbase loyal and sophisticated enough to still support Tyler Perry if he developes more substance in his productions?

I hope he does just take Spike's statement as just a personal uppercut. I hope Tyler steps up to the plate and creates more substance at the same time pleasing those who love his films. We all need to wake up and support the arts across the board!!!!
